Cockatoo Run Sunday 22 February to be hauled
by newly restored diesel locomotive 42101
42101

3801 Limited is proud to operate the inaugural tour of newly restored locomotive 42101
on the Cockatoo Run train on Sunday 22nd February 2015.

The 421 class was built by Clyde Engineering, Granville for the NSW Government Railways in 1965/66. The 421s retained the classic GM/EMD Streamlined nose as with the other Clyde built 42, GM and S locomotives at one end, but featured a flat-cab at the other end. In this respect, they are unique amongst "bulldog nose" locomotives in the world. The 421 class initially entered service on the NSW Main South line before being transferred to Bathurst in 1970 to operate services on the Main Western line between Lithgow and Broken Hill, including the Indian Pacific service. Following a down turn in traffic, all ten 421 class locomotives were withdrawn from service in December 1986/January 1987 and put in store at Junee Locomotive Depot.

Locomotive 42101 was purchased by one of 3801 Limited's volunteers, James Gray, in late 1990, in a very deteriorated condition. In March 2010 the loco was moved to the Eveleigh Railway workshops from the Goulburn Roundhouse, where James, in conjunction with the 3801 Limited team, undertook the restoration, traction motor installation and commissioning, which was completed in late 2014. It has since been repainted in its as delivered NSWGR paint scheme of December 1965 and is now in operational condition and approved for use on the NSW networks. It is now one of only two preserved 421 class locos, and the only one operating.
